Located just south of the Yaquina Bay Jetty in Newport, South Beach State Park is an exceptional camping destination.  In addition to offering a great campground, the park features fishing off of the jetty, crabbing in Yaquina Bay, beach-combing and kayak tours at the nearby Beaver Creek State Natural Area (July 4th through Labor Day.  For reservations call 541.687.6590).  The full service campground includes 227 sites with electrical and water hook-ups, 60 spacious tent sites, three group sites, a hiker and biker camp and 27 yurts, more than any other Oregon state park.

Be sure to visit Oregon’s two premier marine education institutions, the Mark O. Hatfield Marine Science Center and the Oregon Coast Aquarium.  These are just outside the park and are great stops for children.

If you are camping in a tent reserve a spot on the I loop, at the very back of the campground. It's tents only so many of the sites are larger and have slightly more space between them. The walk to the beach is a bit longer but you get a very pretty trail to get there. Don't forget to check out the accessible interpretive boardwalk. And as with most state parks, be prepared for crowds.

South Beach Jetty is a great place along the central Oregon Coast to watch the sunset.
