Western Nebraska hosts several famous landmarks that early pioneers used to while navigating their way to the western frontier. One of the most iconic is the Chimney Rock National Historic Site. According to the National Park Service, The chimney-like structure dates back somewhere between 23 and 34 million years ago and stands 840 feet above the North Platte River Valley. A visitor center greets guests at the entrance just off Nebraska Highway 92. The visitor center is a well-kept resource that houses a gift shop for not only Chimney Rock-inspired souveniers but also historically themed publications, post cards, and the like; exhibits detail the Native American history and culture of the area, pioneer conquests across the plains, and even a theater that regularly shows informational videos.

While you are at the visitor center, access to trails is not readily visible. A parking lot and the center appear to be the limits of the adventure; however, the Chimney Rock Trail is just past the visitor center. Continue on 62F to the first right leading back west onto 98 and travel past the Chimney Rock Cemetery as the route leads to the trailhead. The trail is a short out-and-back jaunt to the base of the icon.
