Sunbeam Hot Springs

Idaho's Highway 75 runs along the Salmon River through the stunning scenery of the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Hidden along this stretch of highway are a multitude of thermal springs, the most popular being Sunbeam Hot Springs. 

The pools sit on the bank of the Salmon River below the highway where a thermal spring cascades from the hillside to the river. A collection of boulders makes the pools difficult to see from the highway, but the steam rising from the river is unmistakable. Bathers often make this a stop during trips in the Salmon River and Sawtooth Mountains. The nearby towns are small, and the pools avoid overcrowding. The location is a recommended respite after a long hike or raft trip. 

Covered changing areas are available, and a paved path leads to the pools. Bathers should be careful moving about on the slippery algae-covered rocks. Eagles, bear, elk and deer, are all very prevalent in the area and may make an appearance along the surrounding riverfront. 

If you find yourself traveling through the area, bring a swimsuit and plan to stop and enjoy the warm, clear waters!
