The Historic Garrett Homestead is located within the El Malpais National Monument, near the Sandstone Bluffs. To reach the homestead it’s less than a 30 minute drive from Grants.

The historic homestead here is just one example of the rich human history surrounding this area. Zuni, Acoma, Laguna, and Navajo people all consider this area important to their culture. Spanish explorers of the 1540s referred to the lava flows as “el malpais” meaning bad country.

Finally, homesteaders found their way here during the Great Depression, including the Garrett’s who built this homestead in 1934.

There isn’t much left of the homestead today, but you will find a partial residential structure and ruins of several outbuildings. Please explore, but don’t disturb any of the ruins.
