From the south trailhead of the Sussex Branch Trail, pass through the gate going north for 1.2 miles.  Watch on the left for a sign designating the Iron Mine Loop trail (blue markers).  Turn left onto the trail which climbs uphill for a short distance.

The trail weaves through the forest passing many glacial erratics.  After about one mile, the trail descends and soon will approach an old iron mine on the right.  The mine is not very deep. There is some relics around the area that are more modern than when this mine was dug.

The trail levels out and passes a swampy area and stream on the left.  This stream connects Johnson Lake and Jefferson Lake.  The trail ends when it reaches the Sussex Branch trail.  Turn right and the trailhead is another 1.5 miles away.
