The Grand Marais Municipal Campground is located on Lake Superior and the Grand Marais harbor. The campground has 300 campsites with numerous camping options from full-hookups to tent sites. The campground is a few blocks from downtown.
The campground has 15 harborside sites with electric hookups, water, and sewer. There are 14 tent-only sites by Lake Superior and about 30 other tents sites. The remaining sites have full hookups, or water and electricity only. All RV campsites have 20-amp and 30-amp electrical service, with many also having 50-amp service.
Roughly half of the sites are available for nightly and weekly reservations; the remainder are seasonal sites and drop-in, first-come/first-serve sites.
The campground has some shaded sites, but most will get some sun. The sites are quite close together so don’t expect much privacy. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. Most of the sites in the campground are back-in sites, but there are some pull-thru sites. The pads are gravel and can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet in length. Dogs on a leash are allowed in the campground.
The campground has four bathrooms with showers which are open from May to mid-October. There is a dump station on site. The campground is open year-round. Firewood, ice, and supplies are for sale at the park office.
The Sweetheart's Bluff nature area, which has two short hiking trails, is located right by the campground. Bicyclists can easily access the Gitchi-Gami state trail from the campground. There are cobblestone beaches, a harbor break wall, public water access, as well as a harbor side pavilion located near the campground.
Minnesota’s north shore of Lake Superior is an extremely popular summer and fall destination, so be sure to reserve your site as early as possible. A link to the website for the Grand Marais Municipal Campground can be found here.
