The Eldfell Volcano is absolutely worth the hike if you plan on visiting Heimaey in Iceland's Westmann Islands. Rather new, this volcano formed in the eruptions of 1973, burying a large portion of the island. This hike is quite a steep ascent of 200 meters, and it is not for raw beginners. Medium fitness hikers will be just fine, but also be aware of strong winds (as the top ridge narrows significantly). Good hiking shoes and a variety of gear that will protect you from the wind is recommended, as a calm sunny trailhead does not always mean the same conditions will meet you at the top. Once you have reached the crest, many thermal vents will welcome you with hot air and hot rocks – be careful where you sit! Beautiful views of the whole town and surrounding water are visible from here.
