Weminuche Wilderness is a federally protected area of the Rocky Mountains. It encompasses approximately 499,771 acres making it the largest Wilderness area in Colorado (USFS). It is located within both the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests and is managed by the United States Forest Service.
The Weminuche Wilderness designation was given in recognition of its rugged yet fragile ecosystems and to protect the headwaters of the Rio Grande River and San Juan River, which provide clean and clear water to millions of people.
This incredibly scenic area attracts thousands of outdoor recreation enthusiasts and overall nature lovers every year. In order to protect the beautiful environment it is critical that all visitors familiarize themselves with the area's special regulations and adhere to the Leave No Trace principles.

THINGS TO DO
The Weminuche Wilderness is a popular area for trail running, hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, horseback riding, nature viewing, camping, and more. The area can be explored via numerous trails that run through the Wilderness including a portion of the Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. It is also possible to access the Weminuche Wilderness via train (see below for a link with details).
