North Halfmoon Creek Trail to Mount Massive is a 13-mile out-and-back to the top of Mount Massive (14,421’). Mount Massive is part of the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains and is located within the Mount Massive Wilderness southwest of Leadville, Colorado. This route begins from the Mount Massive Trailhead and heads west taking the North Halfmoon Creek Trail to the southwest slope of Mount Massive.

At 14,421 feet, Mount Massive is the second highest peak in Colorado and the third highest in the contiguous United States. It sits on a 3-mile long summit ridge that features five additional summits that are all above 14,000 feet!

The North Halfmoon Trail traverses west along Halfmoon Creek through lush forest. This route is fairly flat and gentle for the first 3.80 miles. The trail steepens quickly after that. You will gain approximately 3,400' over the next 2.50 miles to reach the summit! You will be rewarded for your hard work with incredible views in all directions from the summit. Storms roll in quickly in this area, so you don't want to linger too long at the top, as you have a steep descent back to the beginning.

This is a strenuous route that is recommended for experienced hikers who are comfortable navigating across steep, rocky, and loose terrain.
