The Mount Massive Wilderness is a federally protected section of Colorado’s Sawatch Range located in both the San Isabel National Forest and the Leadville National Fish Hatchery. It encompasses 30,540-acres and is managed by both the United States Forest Service (USFS) and the Fish and Wildlife Service.
The area is named after Mount Massive (14,421’), the second highest peak in Colorado. Lodgepole pine forests dominate the lower elevations of this area, followed by spruce, fir, and alpine tundra environments higher up.

THINGS TO DO
This area is a popular location for trail running, hiking, backpacking, camping,and mountain climbing. It features 10 miles of the Colorado Trail which traverses north-to-south across the eastern edge of the Wilderness.

The Wilderness can be explore via numerous trails which extend off of roads surrounding the area.
