The Collegiate Peaks Wilderness is a federally protected area in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. The area encompasses 167,584 acres, is located in three national forests (Gunnison, White River, and Pike-San Isabel) and is managed by the United States Forest Service (USFS).
Collegiate Peaks Wilderness is located at a high elevation and is home to eight “fourteeners” (peaks exceeding 14,000 feet in elevation). It features alpine lakes, flowing streams, stunning scenery and easily accessible trails including 40 miles of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNT)

Huron Peak (14,005'), Missouri Mountain (14,067'), Mt. Columbia (14,073'), Mt. Oxford (14,153' ), Mt. Yale (14,196'), Mt. Belford (14,197'), La Plata Mountain (14,340’), and Mt. Harvard (14,420').
OUTDOOR RECREATION
The Collegiate Peaks Wilderness is a very popular area for outdoor recreation. The area is popular for hiking, backpacking, camping, trail running, and mountain climbing. Generally, the most crowded trails are those leading to the highest peaks in the area.
There are several trailheads in the area that can be accessed from a main road, which contributes to the overcrowding, especially on weekends.
RULES AND REGULATIONS

According to the USFS, the following regulations apply to all Wilderness areas:
“Motorized equipment and equipment used for mechanical transport is prohibited. This includes the use of motor vehicles, motorboats, motorized equipment, bicycles, hang gliders, wagons, carts, portage wheels, and the landing of aircraft including helicopters. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), or drones, may not take off, land, be operated or possessed within designated Wilderness. Wheelchairs suitable for indoor use are exempt.
