Callaghan Country's Journeyman Lodge is a welcoming retreat in the backcountry. If you're up for a robust snowshoe trek to the lodge, your efforts will be well-rewarded with friendly hospitality, a warm fireplace, and incredible food for the duration of your stay. This is one big step up from staying in a rustic forest cabin in the middle of winter. Arrange your overnight stay in advance by contacting Callaghan Country at 877.938.0616 or by visiting the website.

The snowshoe route begins at the bustling Alexander Falls Ski Touring Centre, where skiers and snowshoers alike base their winter adventures. Most visitors will strap on their skis and head for the numerous ski trails accessible from the parking area, but few snowshoers will venture far into the forest. Start on the wide Mainline Trail and look for a sign for the Real Life Trail heading off to the left.

You'll experience solitude as you walk deeper and deeper into the snow-covered landscape. Real Life Trail continues to the Wild Spirit Trail and then Upper Wild Spirit. Each trail is marked with ratings for difficulty. Although there are a few black diamond sections, these are not too difficult on snowshoes. Most of the route follows gently rolling hills, and you'll hardly notice the elevation change.

Along either side of the trail, old-growth cedar trees reach for the sky. The trail also crosses several streams with picturesque cascades tumbling down to lower ground. Watch for "Caution" signs that mark upcoming bridges and terrain changes. As you approach the lodge, pieces of high mountain ridges will suddenly come into view.

Keep in mind that the multi-use trails are groomed for skiers. Avoid walking in ski tracks and follow all posted rules. Dogs are not permitted on Upper Wild Spirit, but if you're taking a shorter walk, dogs are allowed on Mainline, Real Life and Wild Spirit. Whether you're checking in to the lodge or just going for a day hike, check in to the Access Callaghan ski shop and information center for updated conditions, snowshoe rentals, and recommended routes.

If you are exploring more of the snowshoe trails in this area, be sure to check out the Finger Lakes Loop and Alexander Falls.
