Upper Virginia Creek Primitive Campground lies down an unmarked gravel road.
Containing 15 camp sites - each with a fire pit and food locker, this campground offers visitors to the scenic Virginia Lakes Backcountry an opportunity to visit and camp for free in a more 'roughing it' type locale than the adjacent resort cabins or the more crowded Trumbull Lake Campground.
Though a bit less scenic than Lower Virginia Creek Primitive Campground, the camp sites at Upper Virginia Creek tend to be spaced apart and have a bit of privacy. There is a single fork on the dirt road in the campground, with the single vault toilet and most sites laying down the right fork. If one were to continue straight/left at the fork, the road immediately becomes more rough and not accessible by RVs or low clearance passenger cars, leading to two camp sites with a good amount of space and privacy between them.
Only a few sites near the end of the road are actually set close to the creek. Aside from the single vault toilet, and fire rings and lockers, there are no other improvements at the campground. No water or trash cans are available. There are no fees to camp, though the Forest Service posts a 14 day limit on stays.
Some basic groceries and a small restaurant can be found at Virginia Lakes Resort during the summer months, otherwise the nearest food and amenities is in the town of Lee Vining located about 17 miles away.
There is no cel service at the campground. Navigation should be planned ahead.
