Set near the border of California and Arizona along the southern side of Interstate 40 is Topock Maze (sometimes called Mystic Maze) Archaeological Site, an area of spiritual significance believed to have been created by the AhaMakev peoples, or Fort Mojave Native American Tribe, over 600 years ago.
The site which features a landscape of artwork created with stone, known as a geoglyph, is believed to represent a maze that deceased tribal members must pass through in order to complete their journey to the afterlife. While the site once covered much more land at around 50 acres, development of surrounding areas have left only about 10 acres, which is designated on the National Register of Historical Places and also as a state Cultural Area today.
While many drivers pass right by on the interstate and aren't aware of the site lying immediately next to, however invisible to, the freeway, a short drive on a 1 mile gravel road will lead to a parking area and overlook spot. A lone interpretive sign explains the site and its signficance, and from the edge of the feature, it is possible to see some of the rows along the ground.
Though this landlocked artwork can be hard to see from a human height perspective. It is much easier viewed from overhead if the visitor has an option of viewing it this way.
There are no amenities of any kind located at the overlook spot. 2WD vehicles should normally be able to make it on the gravel road. From the end of the road, it is a short walk to the interpretive sign and the edge of the geoglyph formation.
