This 4.5-mile loop starting and ending at the Taylor Trailhead in Santa Clarita offers a pleasant mix of shaded canyon paths, open ridgelines, and expansive views of the Santa Clarita Valley. With moderate elevation gain and a variety of terrain, the loop is perfect for hikers, trail runners, and nature lovers looking for a rewarding, shorter outing in the local foothills.


DESCRIPTION
Start your hike at the Taylor Trailhead, conveniently located off The Old Road near Highway 5. The trail begins with a gentle climb through a shaded oak woodland, offering a peaceful and cool start to your journey. As you continue, the terrain transitions to open areas with native chaparral and glimpses of the surrounding hills.

You’ll traverse a sunny ridgeline with sweeping views of the Santa Clarita Valley and, on clear days, distant mountain ranges. The rolling terrain features gradual climbs and descents, adding a manageable challenge to the hike.

Seasonal wildflowers in spring and golden hues in the fall enhance the beauty of this route. Finish the loop by returning to the Taylor Trailhead parking area.

FLORA AND FAUNA

The trail features diverse plant life, including coast live oaks, California sagebrush, and yucca. In spring, wildflowers such as lupine and California poppies brighten the landscape. Wildlife sightings may include lizards, rabbits, hawks, and occasionally mule deer or coyotes.

Permits: No permits are required for this hike.

Parking: Free parking is available at the Taylor Trailhead, located off The Old Road. Spaces can fill up on weekends, so arriving early is recommended.

SAFETY AND CONSIDERATIONS

  • This route includes sections with significant exposure and minimal shade. During the summer months, temperatures can be extreme, so it’s best to start early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day.

  • There are no reliable water sources along the trail, so make sure to carry plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout your hike.
