Sneaker Beach is a smaller beach in the Salton Sea State Recreation Area that very much has an off the map feel to it, as it tends to be overlooked by area visitors who stick to the nearby Visitor Center.
The beach shares a day use entrance from the highway with the Visitor Center and Headquarters/New Campground, however whereas most of those sites are clustered around each other, Sneaker Beach lies the other direction. A small parking area with a picnic bench and an outhouse sits at the end of the dead end road. From there, visitors can walk out to the sandy shore. The sand here, like that surrounding the sea, is actually pulverized fish bone resulting from the cyclical die offs that occur with the sea's fish population. That is apparent here as the grains are thicker.
Changing water levels and wetness in the sand has resulted in different sand formations. Like other beaches, the surface may appear deceivingly solid, as it may be soft mud as you get nearer to the water. From the water's edge, views abound of the width of the valley, along with the mountains in the Mecca landscape to the east.
Aside from the table and outhouse, there are no amenities here. Swimming is permitted. There is very little shade here and the area is exposed to wind and sun.
Visitors will need to pay a day use fee at the entrance station to the beach.
