The Olivia Terrace to Stough Canyon route is a captivating 9.2-mile lollipop hike nestled in the Verdugo Mountains. This scenic journey offers hikers a unique blend of natural beauty, challenging terrain, and educational opportunities, with a total elevation gain of 2,538 feet. The trail is well-suited for experienced hikers looking for a moderate to challenging day hike.

Starting from Olivia Terrace, the hike follows the Chandler Motorway, a dirt road path that passes the prominent La Tuna Peak and winds across La Tuna Canyon. Venturing onto a primitive single-track trail, hikers are treated to expansive views of the Los Angeles Basin. Along this ridge, the trail passes the historical site of an old Boy Scout Camp before eventually reconnecting with a dirt road path.

Descending towards the Stough Canyon Nature Center, hikers can utilize the facilities, including restrooms, and explore the center's educational exhibits about the Verdugo Mountains' wildlife, flora, fauna, and habitats.

The return journey heads back to the Stough Canyon Motorway, turning left at Stough Saddle, and following the Chandler Motorway back to the starting point.

FLORA AND FAUNA

The Verdugo Mountains host a diverse ecosystem. The trail offers sightings of California sagebrush, chaparral, and coastal scrub that dominate the landscape. Springtime hikers might enjoy a variety of wildflowers, including the vibrant California poppy and lupine. Wildlife in the area includes mule deer, coyotes, and a wide range of bird species, from the red-tailed hawk to the acorn woodpecker. Reptiles such as lizards and the occasional snake are also present, so hikers should tread carefully.

The trail is accessible year-round however the ideal times to visit are late fall to early spring to avoid the summer heat.

Mountain Biking: This area is popular among mountain bikers. Hikers should be aware of their surroundings and share the trail courteously.

Shade: The trail offers little to no shade, making it particularly hot in the summer months. It's advisable to start early in the day and bring ample water, sunscreen, and a hat.

Terrain: The trail includes both dirt road paths and primitive single-track sections. Hikers should wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for uneven terrain.
