Obsidian Campground is a Forest Service managed campground near the Sonora Junction area of Highway 395. Lying 3.5 miles down a dirt road from the highway, the campground is scenically set amongst pine trees and aspens just up a slope from Molybdenite Creek.
The campground is small, and lies off the beaten path, giving it a very secluded feel. With 13 total sites on three small loop roads within the camping area, sites tend to feel like they have a good amount of privacy, and picnic benches for most sites sit within a forested canopy.
Each site has a picnic bench and a fire pit. And each loop road has its own vault toilet. The nearest loop to the entrance has 3 sites, with the two subsequent loops having 5 sites each. The first loop also has several short sloped footpaths leading to the banks of the creek.
Obisidian is set in an area with several trailheads for hiking nearby. Ranging from easy meanders along the creeks to steeper trails like the one to Emma Lake.
Campers are asked to check in and self pay at the entrance kiosk, where the rules are also posted.
Roads are large enough to trailers, however each site has a double parking space not long enough for a trailer attached to a car. Normal passenger vehicles should be able to make the first loop road, however rough rocks may prevent smaller cars from reaching the upper loops.
