The Murphy Ranch Trail is a well marked loop path that follows a ravine course through a verdant neighborhood.
The trail is popular amongst hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. While the section along the ravine keeps to a gentle grade, the path then goes on to a short somewhat steep climb through the oak lined hillsides. The trail remains clear and easy to follow, and despite the slopes, families can often be spotted along this loop. The section along the ravine tends to be wider dirt trail, while once the climbing starts, the trail changes to a hard packed dirt single track that rolls through the hillside landscape.
Views from the top add to the peaceful feeling of the walk. There are additional spur trails through the park that allow hikers to veer from the main trail and explore a little bit if they would like.
Mountain bikers tend to ride this trail in a clockwise direction to take advantage of the gentler climb and more technical downhill, so hikers might want to consider walking this loop in the opposite direction to be better aware of bikers coming. Hiking in a counterclockwise direction also gets the steeper climbing out of the way early, for a nice gradual downhill slope for the remainder of the path.
Coyotes, mountain lions and poison oak have been noted along the trails in this area, so be extra aware if hiking with dogs.
There are numerous picnic benches and a sign showing the trails adjacent to the parking lot. Park and parking area are open daily from sunrise to sunset.
