Monte Cristo Loop is a scenic and challenging 17-mile loop located in the Angeles National Forest, less than an hour from Los Angeles, CA. This route is best suited for experienced hikers seeking solitude, expansive views, and a sense of adventure in the San Gabriel Mountains. While the trail primarily follows dirt roads, it offers consistent elevation gains and access to notable peaks such as Rabbit Peak, Granite Peak, and Roundtop Peak, all part of the Sierra Club’s Hundred Peaks Section.
Much of the terrain is exposed and follows dirt road trails, but the loop's length and elevation profile make it a rewarding challenge. The exposure offers expansive views across the San Gabriel Mountains and stretches out to the desert valleys beyond. Ideal for peak-baggers or those seeking a strenuous adventure, this trail showcases rugged terrain at the heart of Angeles National Forest.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION
Monte Cristo Loop begins at Monte Cristo Campground, following Forest Road 4N18.1 alongside the gentle flow of Monte Cristo Creek. The trail gradually ascends, offering expansive views of nearby peaks and valleys. As hikers progress, they reach the Pony Park Trailhead, which provides restrooms and a potential water source (confirm availability with the Angeles National Forest Ranger District ahead of time). From here, the route continues along 3N17.3 before transitioning onto 3N90, leading past Granite Peak and Round Top Peak. The loop then connects to the Monte Cristo Creek Trail, guiding you back to Forest Road 4N18.1, where you can retrace your steps to the starting point at Monte Cristo Campground.
