This adventure offers high-elevation views, rugged terrain, and plenty of solitude while escaping the bustle of the city. With sweeping views of the San Gabriel Mountains, it’s a great way to experience the area’s natural beauty and rugged landscapes.

The hike to Roundtop Mountain combines physical challenge with scenic rewards, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a fulfilling backcountry experience in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Route Description

The hike begins at the Mill Creek Picnic Area Trailhead and follows the winding dirt path of Pacifico Mountain Road. The trail climbs steadily for about three miles, offering intermittent views along the way. At the junction, turn right onto Roundtop Road and follow the dirt path to the summit of Roundtop Mountain. Along the way, you’ll pass Granite Peak, another peak on the Sierra Club’s Hundred Peaks List. Note that reaching Granite Peak’s summit requires off-trail travel, so only attempt this detour if you are comfortable with rugged terrain and navigation

Highlights

  • Views: Panoramic vistas along the dirt road path and at the summit of Roundtop Mountain.

  • Flora and Fauna: Oak and pine forests, desert chaparral, and the possibility of spotting local wildlife such as mule deer, hawks, and occasionally bighorn sheep.

  • Geology: Rugged rock formations and unique granite outcrops along the route.

Safety and Considerations

  • Water Sources: There are no reliable water sources along this route, so bring plenty, especially in warmer months.

  • Weather: The trail is exposed near the summit, so be prepared for sun and wind. The high elevation can bring sudden weather changes.

  • Sun Exposure: There is little to no shade along this route so be prepared for heat and sun exposure. This hike is best done in the spring and fall when the temperatures are less extreme.

Parking and Access

  • Parking is available at the Mill Creek Picnic Area, which also offers restrooms. Arrive early, as the lot can fill up quickly, especially on weekends
