Lower Virginia Creek Primitive Campground is a free campground spread along the creek beneath groves of pine and aspen trees.
Accessed by a single unsigned gravel road in, these Toiyabe National Forest sites vary from spacious and large to relatively small and set upon sloped ground. Each site contains only a fire pit and food locker. 24 total sites are spread along a linear layout, with three vault toilet buildings spaced throughout the area. No water or any other amenities are available here.
The gravel road in is graded, and tends to be passable by most vehicle types, although there are some holes so passenger vehicles and RVs may need to take the drive very slowly. Lying at a slightly lower elevation than Upper Virginia Creek Primitive Campground and Trumbull Lake Campground, Lower Virginia Creek may be less affected by cold and snow conditions that linger higher in the canyon.
Most sites are set along the creekside, though it is the sites opposite the road from the creek that tend to have a bit more space and privacy.
Mid size RVs can fit in the parking area at most sites.
There is no fee to camp at Lower Virginia Creek Primitive Campground and reservations are not available, however there is a 14 day limit.
There is no access to Upper Virignia Creek Campground from here. Groceries and a small restaurant are available further uphill at Virginia Lakes Resort during the summer season, otherwise Lee Vining is the nearest place for either. Campers should be prepared for no cel service at the campground.
