Located in the Sierra Nevada, Lake Italy is a high alpine lake named for its shape. The mountain is located in the John Muir Wilderness at an elevation just above 11,000 feet. It can be accessed via Pine Creek Trail and the Lake Italy Pass, or as a 12.2-mile, out-and-back side trip from the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) / John Muir Trail (JMT), as described here.
Located at mile 870.5 of the PCT northbound / mile 94.5 of the JMT southbound, the Lake Italy Trail heads east. Located in a landscape of rocks and cliffs, Lake Italy is surrounded by several mountains with elevations exceeding 13,000 feet (Mount Hilgard, Mount Gabb, and Mount Julius Caesar). The area features patches of green grass and small sand beaches with scenic views at the water's edge. This side trip is ideal for thru-hikers that are seeking some solitude and wish to explore a desolate lake in a strikingly beautiful landscape unlike anything else along the PCT or JMT.
