OVERVIEW
Johnston Ridge To Sespe Hot Spring is a 17.4-mile out-and-back hike that leads to the remote and scenic Sespe Hot Springs in Los Padres National Forest. The route offers stunning views of the Sespe Wilderness, rugged canyon terrain, and the reward of soaking in the natural hot springs. This adventure is ideal for experienced hikers or backpackers seeking a challenging yet rewarding journey through a pristine wilderness area. This route can be completed as a hike or trail run in one long day or a one or two-night backpacking trip.

DESCRIPTION
The hike starts at the Johnston Ridge Trailhead and follows the Johnston Ridge Trail for three miles before dropping into the Hot Springs Canyon. The route follows the ridge for several miles, with alternating sections of exposed ridgelines and shaded oak woodlands.

Around 8.5 miles from the trailhead you’ll look for a side trail and take it to Sespe Hot Springs. The final stretch to Sespe Hot Springs requires some navigation along the canyon floor and creek crossings, especially during wet seasons. The hot springs are a collection of pools with varying temperatures, nestled in a serene and remote setting. Take time to relax and soak in the mineral-rich waters while enjoying the quiet beauty of the wilderness.

When you’re ready, retrace your steps back to the Johnston Ridge Trailhead.

FLORA AND FAUNA
The trail features oak woodlands, and seasonal wildflowers. Wildlife sightings may include mule deer, bobcats, hawks, and lizards. Keep an eye out for signs of black bears and mountain lions, which are occasionally spotted in the area.

CAMPING AND PERMITS

  • There is no overnight camping allowed at the Johnston Ridge Trailhead, but camping is permitted at Halfmoon and Thorn Meadows Campgrounds located along Grade Valley Road.

  • Backcountry camping is permitted along the trail. Look for flat, established sites near Sespe Creek or close to the hot springs.

  • Permits:  No permits are required for day hikes, but a free wilderness permit may be required for overnight trips. Check with the Los Padres National Forest ranger station for current regulations.

  • Parking: Parking is available at the Johnston Ridge Trailhead. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended to access the trailhead, especially during or after wet weather.

SAFETY AND CONSIDERATIONS

  • Weather: Best hiked in fall through spring. Avoid summer months due to extreme heat. Be prepared for sudden weather changes, especially in winter.

  • Creek Crossings: During wetter seasons, crossings of Sespe Creek may be challenging. Plan accordingly and avoid the route after heavy rain to minimize flash flood risks.

  • Hot Springs Safety: The water temperatures at the springs can vary significantly. Test the water carefully before soaking.
