The Jawbone Trail is one of several paths accessible by car from the West Pinnacles National Park entry.
Tracing a single track route from the low point of the parking area to a high point at a shaded overlook along the Prewett Point Trail, the Jawbone Trail climbs about 575' in elevation as it first follows a seasonal streambed along a valley floor before beginning a series of switchbacks in order to gain elevation.
The highlight of the path is emerging the climb to a view of the geologic rock pinnacle formations that unveil themselves in the park's near distance horizon. The Jawbone route hits one final stride up a hillside before a trailmarker signs its intersection with the Prewett Point Trail. Making a right turn here leads to the covered vista point along the Prewett Point path. In the immediate distance, The Fingers rock formations jaggedly rise from the forested valley.
Easy to moderate in difficulty, those looking to add to the distance can follow the Prewett Point Trail to the West Pinnacles Visitor Center, or simply retrace their route back down toward the initial starting point.
From the parking area, a short connector trail leads to the Chaparral parking area, with an abundance of additional trails and climbing areas. There is an outhouse and trash can in the parking area, however there are no other amenities available at the trailhead or along the hike.
The Jawbone Trail lies within Pinnacles National Park and is subject to all park rules, entry fees and operating hours. The park's west gate is open daily from 7:30am to 8pm.
