The Horse Creek Trail is a short but rewarding 4 mile out-and-back hike located in the stunning Hoover Wilderness area near Bridgeport, California. This round trip trek begins from the trailhead located at Twin Lakes and offers beautiful views of rugged granite peaks, lush meadows, and the Horsetail Falls waterfall. Perfect for a quick day hike or as an introduction to the Eastern Sierra, this trail provides a taste of the alpine beauty without the need for a full-day commitment.

Getting There
From Bridgeport, take Twin Lakes Road west to Mono Village. Continue to the end of the road, where you’ll find parking near the Horse Creek Trailhead. The trailhead is well-marked and easy to locate, with parking available for both day use and overnight trips.

DESCRIPTION
Starting from the Horse Creek Trailhead, the trail begins by following the creek through a forested area with towering Jeffrey pines and lodgepole pines providing ample shade. The initial section of the trail is relatively flat, making it a pleasant warm-up before the trail begins to climb.

As you continue the trail gradually gains elevation, offering increasingly expansive views of the surrounding peaks, including glimpses of the iconic Matterhorn Peak in the distance.

After about two miles, you'll reach a lovely meadow area that makes for a perfect turnaround point. Here, you can take a break, enjoy a snack, and soak in the serene mountain scenery. The meadow is a peaceful spot, surrounded by wildflowers in the summer months and providing a true sense of the Sierra wilderness.

When you’re ready to head back, simply retrace your steps along the same trail.

Flora and Fauna
The Horse Creek Trail features a variety of Sierra flora, including Jeffrey pines, lodgepole pines, and aspen groves. In the summer, the trail is adorned with wildflowers like lupine, paintbrush, and columbine. Wildlife sightings may include mule deer, squirrels, and various bird species.
