As far as the numerous campgrounds located along the Kern River north of Lake Isabella, Headquarters Campground may offer the most variety in camping options.
Located a 3.8 mile drive from the town of Kernville, Headquarters Campground has 44 sites, including an ADA accessible large family site, two yurts, car sites and RV sites (though there are no electric or water hook ups at the RV sites). The campground sits at an elevation of about 2800' and is open year round.
Each site has a picnic bench, fire pit and lockers for food. Paved roads circle through the campground, though it is common to see families camping here with children riding bikes around the road.
An sandy beach with access to the Kern River is centrally located behind sites 20 and 23. Dogs are welcome on leash, however dogs are not permitted in the river.
The campground accommodates RVs up to 27 feet in length. Potable water spigots are located throughout the campground, along with old wooden outhouse buildings.
For those looking for easy access to the markets and restaurants of the town of Kernville, Headquarters Campground is the closest Forest Service campground to the town.
In all, Headquarters is one of the few year round developed campgrounds in the area and stays pretty busy, especially during the summer months. Those looking to camp here during peak season should reserve well in advance.
