Halfway Group Campground is the largest of the Forest Service group campgrounds along the upper Kern River, both in terms of the number of sites and the numbers of campers that sites can accommodate.
Located a 4.3 mile drive from the town of Kernville, Halfway Group Camp has five camp sites, which vary in capacity from 12 campers to 50 campers.
Each site contains picnic benches and fire pits with shade structures at the higher capacity sites. In the center of the campground is a sandy trail leading to the edge of the Kern River. There is no water available in the campground. A cluster of outhouses serve the camp areas.
Site 1 can accommodate up to 12 people, with reservations costing $48 nightly.
Sites 2 and 3 can accommodate up to 24 campers, with reservations costing $96 nightly.
Sites 4 and 5 can accommodate up to 50 campers, with reservations costing $200 nightly.
Due to the group accommodations, the campground can get noisy if other sites are occupied, however the close walk to the river is a perk.
Halfway Group Campground is open year round.
