Eureka Valley Campground may be one of, if not the most scenic campgrounds along the Sonora Pass highway. Set upon a spacious flat open area surrounded by bouldery mountain peaks and the flowing rapids of the Stanislaus River, that would explain why it might often be hard to find an open spot at this first come, first served campground.
Eureka Valley Campground sits at an altitude of 6100', combining the cool and still mountain air with the dramatic landscape of the higher area. Camp sites sit spread out along a plateau with a flat hard packed gravel road passing through the site. Many sites are exposed, however a few have trees and direct shade. The most beautiful sites are those located at the far end of the loop - particularly sites 12, 13, 14 and 16. Several others lie along the plateau ring upslope of the rushing stream beneath. The downside of placing a number of camp sites along this smaller plateau is that there is little privacy between neighboring camp sites.
A small trail between sites 14 and 16 leads down to a part of the river deep enough for wading.
There are a couple old fashioned water spigots in the campground for drinking water, and a few vault toilets. There are no other groceries or amenities nearby - the nearest are located at Kennedy Meadows Resort 4 miles to the east.
While built as a Forest Service run campground, the campground is managed by Dodge Ridge Corporation. All camp fees are cash only. For those wanting to visit the stream without camping, there are a couple day use parking spots just outside the entrance gate to the campground.
