OVERVIEW

This scenic 14.5-mile out-and-back hike from Donner Trailhead to Tinker Knob offers a rewarding mix of history, rugged terrain, and breathtaking views. Following a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), the route takes you through alpine meadows, rocky ridgelines, and exposed granite slopes with sweeping vistas of the Sierra Nevada. The trail’s moderate but steady climb leads to the summit of Tinker Knob (8,949 feet), where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, the Truckee Basin, and even glimpses of Lake Tahoe on a clear day. This route is a great choice for experienced hikers, backpackers and trail runners looking for a challenging yet rewarding trek in the northern Sierra.

DESCRIPTION

Starting from the Donner Trailhead near Interstate 80, follow the well-maintained Pacific Crest Trail as it gradually ascends through forests of Jeffrey pine and fir. The trail weaves through open meadows that, in summer, burst with colorful wildflowers.

As you gain elevation, the terrain becomes more rugged, with exposed ridgelines offering expansive views of Donner Lake and the surrounding mountains. Around the halfway point, you'll pass Anderson Peak, a notable high point along the route. The final approach to Tinker Knob is a steep but manageable climb along a rocky ridge.

At the summit, soak in the 360-degree views before retracing your steps back to the trailhead.

FLORA AND FAUNA

The hike passes through a mix of dense conifer forests, subalpine meadows, and rocky high-country terrain. Expect to see wildflowers such as lupine, Indian paintbrush, and mule’s ears in the summer. Wildlife in the area includes mule deer, marmots, pikas, and a variety of birds, including Clark’s nutcrackers and mountain bluebirds.

CONSIDERATIONS

  • Water: Limited water sources along the trail—bring plenty or a filter for streams.

  • Weather: Conditions can change rapidly at higher elevations; bring layers and be prepared for wind.

  • Exposure: Some sections along the ridgeline are exposed with little shade.

  • Parking & Access: The Donner Trailhead has a small parking area near the PCT crossing. Arrive early on weekends.

Mountain Bikes: Mountain bikes are not allowed on the PCT.
