The Buttermilk Boulders are a popular bouldering destination featuring a large variety of problems, as well as stunning views of the high Sierra Nevada peaks looming in the near distance.

The boulders are made of quartz monzonite, and are known as glacial erratics (boulders that were carried by glaciers and don’t match the rest of the rock in the area).

Although the Buttermilks may be known for its massive Highball Boulders, there are also ample problems for those who don’t want to take as much risk and enjoy a mellower day of climbing!

There is an ecological restoration effort in effect in the Buttermilk area. Please stay on trail and avoid areas marked as closed. Please also be mindful as to not damage vegetation with crashpad placement.

Note that the road to the Buttermilks is rough and washboardy, although it should be passible in any vehicle with some patience. Long ago there was an old dairy out this way, and local legend has it that this road could bounce and churn fresh milk into buttermilk on its way into Bishop.
