The Bullfrog to Kearsarge Loop is a picturesque 15-mile route through the Sierra Nevada, just outside of Independence, California. This loop offers a challenging climb through the Inyo National Forest, surrounded by breathtaking vistas and pristine natural beauty. The route connects the Bullfrog Lake Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) / John Muir Trail (JMT), and the Kearsarge Pass Trail.
This is an excellent hike or trail run for anyone looking for a pristine wilderness experience away from the city hubbub but without the time to spend on a longer backpacking trip. This route also provides access to
STARTING POINT
The hike begins at the Onion Valley Campground / Kearsarge Pass Trailhead, accessible via Onion Valley Road west of Independence off Highway 395. This trailhead features a large paved parking area, toilets, bear vaults, and water. It is available for day use and overnight parking.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION
The Kearsarge Pass Trail ascends through a series of switchbacks in a beautiful pine forest, passing several alpine lakes before reaching the top of Kearsarge Pass (11,700’). From this vantage point, hikers are treated to expansive views as they enter Kings Canyon National Park. After descending Kearsarge Pass, the route turns left at the Bullfrog Lake Trail junction. This trail skirts above Bullfrog Lake and connects with the Pacific Crest Trail / John Muir Trail. The route heads north on the PCT/JMT and then turns east on the Kearsarge Pass Trail to return to the starting point.
