An iconic American landmark and one of the most-photographed spots in New York City, the Brooklyn Bridge is a must-see for both visitors and locals in New York City. It spans the East River to connect Brooklyn and Manhattan, where it has served as a main thoroughfare since its construction in 1883. A serious feat of engineering for its time, it was the first bridge of its type to ever be constructed, and it has remained famous for its gallant aesthetic of stone-hewn towers and patterned cable arrangement.
Through the years the Brooklyn Bridge has served far more purpose than the simple utility of crossing the river. In addition to being one of the city's most famous wine cellars in the 19th century, the bridge has been parade grounds, demonstration site, event venue, tourist destination, and a symbol of New York City.
The waterfront on the Brooklyn side is also a pleasant public park, offering grassy lawns, various activities, and fantastic views of the bridge and downtown Manhattan. One of the best spots is Empire Fulton Ferry, where you can get right beneath the span of the bridge for photos. There is also a grassy lawn in the shadow of the bridge and a vintage carousel open for rides on the pier.
Brooklyn Bridge Park extends for many blocks to the south of the bridge, occupying several piers. Attractions include a greenway, waterfront, ferry landings, more lawns, playgrounds, roller rink, soccer fields, beach volleyball, restaurants, vendors, music venues, and more.
