This out and back trail is located in Tonto National Forest, across the road from Granite Reef Recreational Area.  The immediate area has many trails popular with mountain bikers and even during weekdays, hikers are likely to encounter bikers on the trail.

There is a small gravel parking area at the trailhead.  The trail at the trailhead is called the Roadrunner trail and in a short distance, ends on the Ridge Trail.  To the north of the trail is Mount McDowell and the the south is Peak 1970.  This low ridge has unobstructed views and the trail is easy to follow.  The Ridge trail continues nearly two miles south from the trailhead.

The Ridge trail ends at a junction withthe Saddle Trail.  Stop here and return the way you came, back to the trailhead.
