Nestled in Northern Phoenix, Lookout Mountain Circumference Trail is a beautiful trail that circumnavigates Lookout Mountain. This mountain is part of the Phoenix Mountains. This trail is great for hikers to enjoy on the 2.3 miles that loops the mountain.
There are several access points to get on the trail, but the most convenient access point is at the Lookout Mountain Trailhead off 16th St and Greenway. This access point has no water or facilities, but it is right on the trail. Hikers can go in either direction. For hikes choosing to go counterclockwise they will start out to the west with a slight incline but then they will have views of the surrounding neighborhoods.
As hikers round the mountain hikers will have more views of the different mountains of the Phoenix Mountain Range such as Piestewa Peak. As the trail wraps back around to the east hikers will have the best views on the south side of the mountain as the trail pulls away from the adjoining neighborhoods. Hikers should be mindful that there are several trails that cross paths so hikers should make sure they stay on the circumference trail.
Hikers will make one final turn back north to the trailhead. Once hikers return to where they start, they can tack on a trip to the summit if they so choose. The trip to the summit is very steep for how short the climb is. For a shorter ascent they can summit from the south side of the circumference trail as well.
This hike has minimal elevation gain and is a great hike for beginners. What also makes this trail great is how accessible it is to get to, and hikers should enjoy the well-maintained trail. Hikes can also enjoy the nearby Lookout Mountain Park as a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
