Grapevine Canyon is a striking 31.1-mile point-to-point hike, stretching from South Kaibab Trailhead to Grandview Trailhead through the Grand Canyon. This journey, embracing the Tonto Trail, showcases the canyon's majestic geological formations, rich ecosystems, and awe-inspiring vistas, notably the intricate passage through Grapevine Canyon.

The trek begins at the South Kaibab Trailhead, where you descend into the canyon's grandeur, following the Tonto Trail around the west arm of Cottonwood Creek. The Tonto Trail is fairly well marked and generally takes the path of least resistance, rolling in and out of drainages and skirting the canyon’s edge.

The path to Grapevine Canyon includes a stretch of narrow and exposed trail that requires focus and care. Grapevine Canyon itself is the trek's gem, with its vastness demanding 2-3 hours to traverse due to its size and complex terrain.

CAMPING AND PERMITS
Overnight camping along this route requires a permit from the Grand Canyon Backcountry Information Center. It's best to arrange permits well ahead of your trip, as demand can be high during peak seasons.

WHEN TO VISIT
The ideal times for this hike are spring and fall when temperatures are more agreeable and water sources more dependable.

FLORA AND FAUNA
Along the trail, you may encounter diverse flora, including resilient desert plants and blooming wildflowers in spring. The area is also home to wildlife such as mule deer, bighorn sheep, and various birds, including the iconic California condor and the spirited canyon wren.

SAFETY AND CONSIDERATIONS
This challenging route demands good fitness levels and navigation skills. Hikers should carry a comprehensive map, compass, and possibly a GPS device. The absence of water sources means carrying an adequate water supply is crucial, along with purification methods. Dress suitably for the desert conditions, with sunscreen and a hat to protect against the sun.
