Māngere Mountain is a dormant volcano located within Māngere Domain. It is also known by the names Te Pane o Mataoho and Te Ara Puero. This also was the site of a major Māori settlement. The hike to the top of Māngere Mountain is easy and popular. This out and back trail is about 1.2 miles long and gains 217 feet of elevation.

This hike starts from the Onehunga Mangere United Sports Club parking lot. There is a public toilet available here. You will see a sign that says, “Walkway to Māngere Mountain”. Pass through the gate here and begin hiking south. The path is gravel for the entire hike and travels around the volcano’s crater. You will begin hiking gradually uphill almost immediately. The trail here is lined by trees. The top of Māngere Mountain will be visible to the north.

After .25 miles, you will enjoy a brief downhill section before continuing uphill. During this section, you will enjoy spectacular views of Puketutu Island, Manukau Harbor, and Waitakere Ranges. Continue uphill for 0.3 miles before reaching a set of stone stairs. These will lead you to the summit. From the top, there are great views in every direction. The crater will be visible to the south. To the north, you will be able to see Mount Eden and One Tree Hill. You will also be able to see Sky Tower in Auckland CBD. From here, turn around and retrace your steps to return to the parking lot.

Māngere Domain is open for hiking year-round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are allowed on this trail as long as they are on a leash. The hike to the top of Māngere Mountain is a wonderful opportunity to traverse one of Auckland’s most intact volcanic cones.
