The Dam Mountain Trail is an excellent way to explore Lake Catherine State Park. This scenic trail winds along the shores of Lake Catherine and features a seasonal waterfall, offering a wonderful overlook of the lake.
The trail begins behind the campground, meandering through a forested area that leads to the lake's edge. The first tenth of a mile runs adjacent to the campground, but hikers will soon find themselves next to the water. The trail is marked with white blazes, with two blazes indicating a split in the path or a sharp turn.
The trail remains flat along the shoreline, and at the half-mile mark, it crosses a seasonal waterfall that is usually dry by fall. At this point, hikers can choose to go either clockwise or counterclockwise. Opting for the clockwise direction leads hikers up a steep, rocky section. While this ascent can be challenging, it may be easier than the descent. The climb is relatively short, and once hikers reach the top, they will enjoy a flatter hike along the ridgeline.
This portion of the trail features several lookout points, including one with a bench, offering stunning views of the lake below. During fall the leaves changing provide a colorful touch to the ridgeline in the fall.
As hikers continue, they will make a sharp turn and begin a gradual descent. Once they reach a small creek, they’ll know they are on the final portion of the loop, leading them back to the waterfall. After enjoying the waterfall, hikers will retrace their steps back to the parking lot.
This trail is a fantastic way to experience the beauty of the state park. Hikers can enjoy the views and may even spot white-tailed deer that populate the area. Additionally, entrance to the park is free, and restrooms are available at the trailhead.
