Ayo Rock Formation is an interesting and enigmatic area on the island of Aruba.
While much of the island tends to be sandy and low-lying, the Ayo Rock Formation stands at a crest high enough that the Arawak settlers used to use the area as a vantage point to look for incoming storms, and on a clear day it is possible to see the coast of Venezuela.
The rocks are large shaped boulders standing atop a hillside. The area takes on the feel of a public park, with a combination of dirt and paved walking paths tracing a course throughout the formations. Along this walking path, petroglyphs, elevated viewpoints, and narrow tunnels navigating the boulders can be found. Near the bottom of the stone formations is a flat area with covered picnic tables, lawn space, and bathrooms.
As there are few other areas containing sizeable boulders like this on the entire island, the Ayo Rock Formation makes an interesting stop. Set on the arid east side of the island, the area has the feel of a desert environment rather than the more tropical climate nearer the tourist centers.
There is no fee to visit Ayo Rock Formation. There are several parking spaces located beside the entrance to the rock formation area.
There is another similar nearby rock formation laid out for public visiting at the Casibari Rock Formations.
