Walker Pass Campground lies along the Pacific Crest Trail, at a pass that marks the divide between the Southern and Central California portions of the hiking trail.
Sitting at about 5000' in elevation, the BLM campground has several sites - most dispersed along the hillside - that are free of charge. The PCT passes adjacent to the campground, however the campground is also at the edge of the Kiavah Wilderness area, with another trail heading from the site into the wilderness backcountry.
Two of the sites are along a small asphalt road, each with covered picnic bench and hanging food hook. The sites located on the hillside have only a picnic bench with flattish areas for tents. With no reservations, the hierarchy of sites goes to the earliest arrivals.
There are also small corrals for equestrians who stay here.
Views into the valley of the Southern Sierras are dramatic from the campground, and it lies just off of highway 178, which doesn't see that much traffic. Joshua trees, juniper and short pines all dot the area.
There is a vault toilet here, however no water and no cel service.
Campers should prepare for the possibility of extreme cold and extreme heat during the winter and summer months.
