Shepherds Pass to Lake South America is a 37.5-mile loop through the John Muir Wilderness and Sequoia National Park. The trailhead is located outside of Independence, California, which is 3.5 hours north of Los Angeles. It's a challenging route with incredible views surrounded by pristine nature. This hike features lush meadows, jagged granite peaks, and a side trip to Lake South America which is the headwaters of the Kern River. The terrain is rocky and steep and traverses through some remote areas in the Sierra Nevada therefore it is recommended for experienced hikers.
The trail begins with Shepherds Pass Trail, one of several access trails in the eastern Sierra Nevada. Shepherds Pass Trail begins in Owens Valley and ascends about 6,000 feet in 10 miles to reach the pass. From the pass, the trail continues southwest to a junction with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) / John Muir Trail (JMT). Turn right and follow the PCT/JMT very briefly. Approximately .3 miles later, turn left on the Lake South America Trail and head west.
Lake South America Trail stretches west for 2.5 miles to reach Kern River. From the river, the Lake South America Trail turns right and follows the river north. The trail climbs a basin to a ridge with scenic views of Lake South America. As the trail descends from the ridge, it meanders along the northwest shore of the lake.
As you leave the lake, climb back up the ridge and follow the Lake South America Trail east, which creates a clockwise loop and returns you to the junction with the PCT/JMT. You can then retrace your steps back to the trailhead via the Shepherds Pass Trail.
