The Pond 1 Loop is an easy walk around one of the larger and most accessible ponds within the San Joaquin Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Irvine Ranch Water District's San Joaquin Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary is a 300 acre wetlands natural area in the center of Orange County that provides an environment for over 300 species of birds. With 12 miles of walking trails, the Pond 1 Loop is an easy path that circles a pond nearest to the parking area.
The trail is a wide, flat gravel path with several benches set along the pond shoreline, with views of some of the surrounding towers of Irvine and Santa Ana rising from the skylines behind the ponds and brush.
The sanctuary is popular with walkers and photographers, and a highlight is the nightly rush of birds circling the skies around dusk. The Pond 1 Loop sticks to the pond environment, though other trails branch off into more forested areas. Additionally, the National Audobon Society maintains a visitor center area beside the parking lot that contains native plant gardens, a butterfly garden, and covered benches.
The wildlife sanctuary is open daily from dusk until dawn, there is no fee to visit. Visitors should be aware that bikes and dogs are not permitted on the trails. Full rules and details can be found at the Irvine Water District website. Bathrooms and drinking fountains are located at the parking lot.
