Lodgepole Campground, named for the dense pines that provide a canopy cover over the spacious camping area, is located adjacent to Lake Valley Reservoir in the High Sierra.
Pacific Gas & Electric owns the land, as the reservoir which lies along the American River watershed is used to generate hydroelectric power. Lying a bit off the beaten path, the campground frequently has open spaces.
A portion of the camp sites can be reserved online, while others are available only on a first come, first serve basis. While the campground is basic, with sites each having a picnic bench, fire pit, and lockers to keep food from bears, there are a couple features that help the camping experience. A short service road climbs a slope up to Lake Valley Reservoir, which is a popular fishing and paddling spot during the warm summer months. The stream flows from the reservoir right through the middle of the campground, with the shallow typically-low flow being great for dipping your feet into.
Sites are located along a couple loop roads. The entirety of the road from the freeway to the campground is paved.
A camp host is located onsite. Campers are asked to self pay at the entrance station. Vault toilets are located throughout the campground.
At an elevation of 5840', Lodgepole Campground is open seasonally and closed during winter conditions. Visitors can use Silvertip Day Use Area [add hyperlink] on the other side of the reservoir to access a small boat launch and ramp for paddle craft.
As of 2022, nightly fees were $30 per site, with an additional $2 per pet fee.
