The Disappearing Act Trail is a short loop trail through an ecological preserve along the UC Irvine campus that offers a single track route to climb to wide views over the surrounding area.
The trail, named for a sign at its high point describing how land development has led to the disappearance of most of the region's Coastal Sage Scrub habitat. Efforts are visible along this trail at habitat restoration efforts going on by students and university faculty.
The trail follows a dirt single track that traces the lower portion of the landscape along a fenceline before climbing and having a much more open feel while meandering between elevated views of the surrounding environment, including campus buildings and towers in the near distance, though with Catalina Island visible in the further distance.
The path rolls through flora like sage scrub and prickly pear, with several bird species visible darting through the brush.
Along the path is a short sput leading to the high point and an interpretive sign, along with the area's best views.
The trail begins at the top of an outdoor plaza between campus buildings.
The trail is open from sunrise to sunset. There are no amenities along the path. This trail can get very muddy following wet conditions.
