Beginner’s Guide to the Kedarkantha Trek: Everything You Need to Know

    AbdulBasit beyondboundaries, Alaska

The Kedarkantha journey is one of those treasures hidden away, scattering adventure and natural beauty in their true avatars at height ranges of 6 to 12,500 feet high above the gorgeous Himalayas. This beautiful ride is also known as the Gateway to Uttarakhand, taking one through scenic land areas, snow-capped mountains, and cultural splendour. Kedarkantha is the place that will leave an unforgettable footprint on your heart and soul, no matter how much experience you carry along with you.

    Understanding the Allure of Kedarkantha

Kedarkantha, in the scenic, peaceful Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, rises to an elevation of 12,500 feet (3,810 meters). The trek is famous for its variety of beautiful vistas, turning from fertile alpine fields to great snow-capped peaks and brooks. These will give you calmness and amazement as the trail leads you along.

Lush meadows covered with grass, snow, and rocks are always a part of the alpine environment on the south side of the Himalayas; this is one of the main attraction points in the Kedarkantha trek. Hailing at an altitude of 3,810 m, the summit offers a magnificent view of the nearby peaks, which include Swargarohini in all its glory, as well as Bandarpoonch and Ranglana. The image of these majestic mountains in the distance will haunt you well after your trip has ended, as you are left with mounds of memories among many other beautiful sites that come along with a peaceful, clear blue sky.

    Preparing for the Kedarkantha Trek

Before taking up the Kedarkantha challenge, one should be prepared both mentally and physically. It may be interesting to note that this trek falls in the category of easy treks, so the right equipment and fitness level are required to cope with the surroundings.

    Physical Preparation

The Kedarkantha trek needs decent stamina and cardiovascular fitness. It is wise to engage in regular workouts, concentrating on strength-building, trekking, and walking some weeks prior to the journey. This will prepare your body and particularly your legs for the climbs and descents.

It is also pertinent to train your body so that it can get acclimatized to the high altitude. This can be done by gradually increasing the period of time spent at high altitudes, whether through practice hikes or going to nearby hills. This will help your body adjust to the reduced oxygen levels.

    Gear and Equipment

Proper gear and equipment is very important if you plan to go on a Kedarkantha trek without any difficulties, and it is also enjoyable. That is why make sure you buy protective walking shoes, layers of clothing that allow you to keep warmth, a good-quality hiking bag, and basic things such as a water container, some food, and a torch.

Also, the weather patterns are very important because there can be different temperatures and weather in the Kedarkantha region, from sunny and warm to snowy and extremely cold. Thus, it is essential to pack the right mix of softshell jackets, warm layers, rain and windproof gear, and sunscreen for your trip.

    Choosing the Right Trek Package

While preparing for your Kedarkantha trek, on the internet you will come across a number of the different trek packages offered by a number of adventure companies. It is essential to choose a transit operator who is credible and experienced, like Himalayan Daredevils, to ensure safety and a well-structured itinerary.

Among the adventure travel companies, Himalayan Daredevils is probably the most celebrated, as you can find a wide range of packages for the Kedarkantha trek to suit different fitness levels and financial constraints. Their team of trek leaders, guides and porters is very professional and ensures that every aspect of your trekking experience is enjoyable, right from the planning stage to the completion of the trek.

One of the core values embraced by Himalayan Daredevils in their Kedarkantha trek packages is the aspect of customization and personalization. They work with each and every trekker to understand his or her travel needs and preferences and make the changes to the plan as necessary. This ensures that you make the best out of your trekking adventure at Kedarkantha, whether you are hiking by yourself or with other people or family.

    The Kedarkantha Trek Itinerary

The duration of the Kedarkantha trek is generally around 5-6 days, depending on the itinerary and also the speed of the group. Here is an example itinerary for you to understand better.

Day 1: Trekking Adventure from Dehradun to Sankri Village

Starting early in the morning at about 6 am, you set off for Dehradun Railway Station, where everyone will meet up to start the trekking journey. Then you will arrive in Sankri Village and check in to your hotel, where you can freshen up a bit and rest after all the hours spent traveling. Later on, the trek leader would introduce you to the support staff, and there would be a briefing session in the end. So enjoy your grand dinner at the hotel, followed by a night stay at the hotel.

Day 2: Majestic Morning Views and Adventurous Kedarkantha Trek

Before starting off into the woods, a few words are uttered by the Trek Leaders, followed by a sumptuous breakfast. Winning the adventurous journey brings you to the beautiful Juda Ka Talab, where you will pitch your tents for the night and lie back for stargazing. The evening is formed around the mouth-watering dinner prepared at the campsite of Juda Ka Talab Teppat, thus sealing the whole experience of trekking.

Day 3: Trekking to Kedarkantha Base Camp

Wake up, have refreshing morning tea and breakfast, then attend a briefing session with the trek leader before starting the journey towards Kedarkantha Base Camp. The trek lasts 2–3 hours through beautiful snow-lined paths and lush terrains with breathtaking views of massive Himalayan peaks like Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag, and Ranglana. Once you arrive at the campsite, a nice lunch will await you, followed by a sumptuous dinner towards the end of the day, which will see you sleeping over at Kedarkantha Base Camp. Make sure you have warm layers with you because the mercury is likely to dip in the nighttime hours.

Day 4: Conquering the Kedarkantha Summit

The main goal is to summit the Kedarkantha Peak at an altitude of 12,500 feet above sea level. The very cold and quite windy early morning ascent is made worthwhile by the spectacular sunrise and the breathtaking views from the summit. After descending to base camp, the trekkers have a refreshing lunch before going on to the campsite at Juda Ka Talab for another night in the tent.

Day 5: Kedarkantha Base Camp, Sankri

Finally, the trek ends in Sankri from the Juda Ka Talab Campsite, and the trekkers head towards Sankri, this beautiful village, following a path through the forest of pine trees and stone. The trekkers finalize their staying period at Sankri before heading downwards to Dehradun late in the evening to mark the end of their journey on the Kedarkantha Trek.

Drink Plenty of Water: Consuming enough liquid is paramount, more so when it comes to high altitude. Carry a portable water container and watch your water intake.

Do Not Overpack: Improvise where possible and ensure that you do not carry bulk objects since every extra pound will be heavier as you will be ascending. Carry the important things and let the porters carry the rest.
