Clark Island State Park is a remote marine park located approximately 5 miles to the west of Lummi Island. The paddle begins by launching from Gooseberry Point near Fisherman's Cove Marina and crossing over to the northern side of Lummi Island. Keep an eye out for curious harbor seals, porpoises, and whales as you approach the northern side of Lummi Island. Take a breather among the rocks that dot the coastline of Lummi Island and prepare for the exposed crossing to Clark Island.

Depending on weather and currents, this crossing can vary greatly in difficulty, and it should not be taken lightly.  Paddlers should have a strong understanding of weather and currents when attempting the crossing between Lummi Island and Clark Island. It is not uncommon for conditions to change suddenly in this area. The use of a VHF radio is recommended to monitor shipping traffic.

Clark Island is a stunning, skinny island that offers 15 campsites all along the eastern shore and a handful of picnic areas along the western shore. Be sure to check out the intertidal areas along the southern end of the island or find one of the several benches along the bluffs to watch the sunset and take in a view of Mount Baker and Lummi Island. There are two composting toilets on the island, but no running water. Clark Island is a popular spot for kayakers continuing on to the northern islands of Sucia, Matia, and Patos.

Before you head out on your next sea kayaking adventure to Clark Island, make sure you have the right gear!
