One of two campgrounds in Zion Canyon in Zion National Park, South Campground is a great location for tent campers or those who do not need electric hook ups. With generally larger sites and more space between the sites than the tent loops of Watchman Campground, South Campground would be better for most tent campers and families with children.
Situated just a short walk from the visitor center and the shuttle bus stop, South Campground is very conveniently located for an exploration of the Zion Canyon area. The shuttle to the town of Springdale, where you can find restaurants, bars, stores, galleries and outfitters, is just a short walk away. South Campground really does offer the best of both the park and civilized amenities.
The sites at South Campground vary from large, level sites that are suitable for a large RV or groups of tents to small drive-up or walk-in sites along the Virgin River. There is not a lot of privacy between sites, but the cottonwood trees that fill the campground provide shade in the warmer months. Many sites are a bit uneven or bumpy, and a few have pretty serious irrigation ditches right across the site, so be cautious when entering with an RV. Sites nearer the river are better than sites along the road, but nighttime traffic is almost non-existent, so any area of the campground would be acceptable.
South Campground is first-come, first-serve. However, during the busy season, reservations are available up to two weeks prior to visiting. During the rest of the year, plan to get there early. There is considerable daily turnover at the park, however, so there are usually sites that are available between 8 a.m. and noon.

It was a great campground! The easy walking access to the shuttle was fantastic and the close driving distance to town made getting food easy, which was lovely.
