The Wallowa Lake Tramway is a popular gondola ride from the tourist area on the south side of Wallowa Lake to the top of Mt. Howard.
The tramway takes passengers on a 3700' climb in elevation opening up wide views of the basin surrounding Wallowa Lake before dropping riders off even with the peaks in the surrounding Eagle Cap Wilderness. The tramway peaks at about 8150' in elevation.
At the top are about two miles of easy trails leading to scenic overlook points. Visitors can also stop by the Summit Grill, a restaurant with drinks and a patio perched overlooking all below.
At the time of its construction in 1970, the Wallowa Lake Tramway was the steepest vertical lift in North America. From overlook points at the top, it's possible to see the states of Washington and Idaho. Interpretive signs are placed along the trails to describe the landmarks visible from the trail as well as high elevation flora.
The tramway operates seasonally from about mid-May to early October, varying by seasonal conditions.
Reservations are available online, otherwise tickets can be purchased at the base of the tram. The tram can accommodate passengers who need accessibility. An up-to-date operating calendar and current ticket rates can be seen on the Wallowa Lake Tramway website.
