Situated on the banks of the John Day River halfway between Spray and Kimberly, Oregon, Shady Grove Recreation Site is a modest little roadside park. For those visiting in mid-summer, however, the thick grove of cottonwood trees offers welcome relief from the Central Oregon sun in a landscape where shade can be difficult to find.

With access to the Wild and Scenic John Day River, this Bureau of Land Management park offers a few picnic tables and a vault toilet for the weary traveler, but no overnight camping.

If you are looking for overnight accommodations, consider Lone Pine and Big Bend Recreation Site 8 miles further east on Highway 402, or venture west to Spray Waterfront Park, which maintains six walk-in campsites.
