The north shore of Meacham Lake has long been a destination for locals and visitors alike. However, it wasn’t until 1932 that public access became available. When the state bought the land and began construction on a campground, it also provided access to the lake for fishing, swimming, and boating. Today, Meacham Lake State Park serves as a relatively quiet getaway in the mountains.
While most visitors spend more than a day here at the campground, the park is available to day users. The highlight is the picnic area and swimming beach, which feature a pavilion, playground, fireplaces, and a large bathhouse. A volleyball court and large fields in the picnic area allow for several traditional sports. The sandy beach stretches for several hundred yards in both directions, providing ample room for picnickers and sunbathers.
Debar Mountain is another great feature of the park. The 7.4-mile roundtrip hike gains about 1,700 feet of elevation as it climbs moderately through a mixed deciduous forest. Just under a mile below the summit, hikers will find the Debar lean-to. The climb steepens after this, becoming quite rocky before reaching the summit. At the top, visitors will find sweeping views of the surroundings, including great views of Meacham Lake. Several other hikes, including St. Regis Mountain are very nearby as well.
Rowboat and canoe rentals are available for a fee, and a boat launch is located at the southeastern end of the park. The lake is a popular destination for fishing. Common fish include northern pike, yellow perch, and bullhead.
